"I know what I want for my birthday..."

These were the words I heard a couple months ago from my soon-to-be 17 year old son. Now as these words were spilling from his lips and I was trying very hard to not roll my eyes in my usual fashion waiting for the typical explanation of just why he needs the latest top of the line electronic gadget, he springs on me..."Mom, I'd like you to make me a new quilt." "WHAT?!!! Did I hear this child correctly?" Better yet, IS THIS MY CHILD? He was due for a new one so now I've sent myself on a guilt trip after all the eye rolling & assuming on my part.

The last one I made him was a bit old...after all I made it for him when he was nine and he has outgrown the kaleidoscope stack-n-whack pattern I did. It's not so much the pattern but the fabric I used waaaaaaaaaay back then. :o)

So...the quilt making process began. I was given strict instructions...colors choices, no flowers, leaves, or anything remotely girlish. Heaven forbid it should be girly.

I could not buy fabric without his approval first...so I purchased a few fat quarters (knowing full well I'd never actually get him a quilt store) and ran them by him for approval...of course he loved them. I've got good taste....HA HA HA It's full of ethnics prints & batiks in browns, gold, deep reds & greens. I snuck in a really pretty batik gold & brown hawaiian print but he didn't notice it YET...it's too late now.

The first photo shows me working out the pattern on the design wall (directly above my treadmill...ignore that part.) It's a gridded flannel that is used just for this purpose but I've had it folded and tucked away for a few years now so I just pinned it up temporarily so I could move individual blocks around and see what I needed as I went.

The second photo is it all in place with the top half sew together in rows...the last two rows still need to be completed. I still need to put on borders. I'm having it quilted rather than doing it myself (call me lazy...actually it's because of my eyes for those of you who know about my vision issues) with dark brown batik looking flannel on the back.

The third photo I just added for fun. It's a little shelf to the left of the design wall that I refer to as "my favorite things" shelf. I rotate stuff around on it from time to time...and my latest little dumplings usually sit up there waiting to be adopted. Which reminds me I need to get my Etsy shop set up. But as you can see I've been a bit preoccupied.

Enjoy!

Sweet Sally Says Hello!

Please say hello to my latest little bruin, Sally. She's a sweet yet silly little girl from my ragamuffin series. Sally measures in at 8 inches tall. Although I have pictured her standing she much prefers to sit and had to be encouraged to show her slim figure (she's a bit shy). Sally's fur is a semi-sparse curly matted mohair in a beautiful shade of stone. She's been softly stuffed so she sort of slumps and is oh so squeezably soft.

Sally has also been carefully scissor sculpted as well as highlighted to bring our her girlish details. Sally is currently available directly from me for $95 plus shipping. I will soon be opening my own Etsy shop once I have all the details figured out. So keep your eyes open for Apple Dumpling Bears on Etsy.

And, on a very positive note for those who have been wondering about me...things are going WONDERFULLY!!! 2008 so far IS a much better year.
Count your blessings,
Shantell
